Last week we shared the behind the scenes of our photo shoot at Bosscat Kitchen & Libations. We’re back today with more to show and tell!

As we stated before, Bosscat is a fantastic restaurant and bar located in Newport Beach (our neighbors across the street). They serve fantastic food, amazing drinks, and did we mention the whiskey room? Awesome.

We were able to take great shots at Bosscat thanks to their awesome setup. They have a great look and feel to the restaurant which is what drew us to the location.

Here’s OriginalBOS CEO Grant Vollmer and Account Manager Aaron Angeles discussing the Napa Wine Chiller with Bosscat co-owner, John Reed.

Ball drop!

The many uses for the Napa Wine Chiller

The shots inside the restaurant were particularly fun because the kind (and very talented) bartender of Bosscat allowed us to step behind the bar to get some great new angles.

The essential barware

More photos will be posted on our social media channels and on www.OriginalBOS.com in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for a behind the scenes video as well!
About a month ago we had a photo shoot at Bosscat Kitchen & Libations! We love taking new images of BOS products and when deciding on a location for the shoot, we knew it had to be somewhere amazing. Bosscat Kitchen & Libations came to mind and we contacted the owners about doing a photo shoot at their restaurant. We were psyched when John Reed and Leslie Nguyen, co-owners of Bosscat, were just as excited for us to shoot there as we were!

If you don’t know, Bosscat is a top of the line restaurant & bar located in Newport Beach, right across from OriginalBOS headquarters. Bosscat is the home of some very creative and delicious food and drink items. If you are local to the area or in So Cal for a visit, you absolutely need to stop by. They also have a whiskey room that is sure to impress, which is one of our favorite things about this spot!

We arrived around 2:00 pm on a Wednesday, started getting everything together and began the photo shoot. Bosscat has a very homey and stylish feel to it which was great for us and the shots!

The main goal for the shoot was to get some new lifestyle and product shots. Bosscat was the perfect place to have a photo shoot since our styles (and interests) are so similar.

Here’s a sneak peek at the photos we took at Bosscat! Stay tuned for more behind the scene blog posts on the shoot.

Now that we've gone over what differentiates whiskies let's get into a little whiskey history (that rhymed).

From Greek toga partiers in the 3rd century to Italian wine tasters in the 15th century alcohol has been apart of human history for a wickedly long time. According to James Ross, author of Whisky, the first written evidence of whisky production was an order from the king of Scotland in 1495 to a friar for the production of about 500 bottles worth of whisky. Now that sounds like a party!

Early distillation practices of whiskey produced a gnarly substance that was sure to knock any sane person right on their ass. Most modern day whiskey lovers probably would have avoided the drink entirely! It wasn’t until later that the production of whiskey evolved to create the mellow, smooth flavor we all know and love today.

The first licensed whisky Distillery (also the world’s oldest) is Ireland’s Old Bushmills Distillery which was opened in 1608. Since Bushmills whiskey has had a quite a wild ride through the years. From being banned after the English Malt Tax of 1725 to being used as currency during the American Revolution, it’s been through its fair share of random. During the American Prohibition whiskey was even prescribed by doctors to aid in the treatment of patients! Even I wouldn’t mind getting sick if my doctor prescribed me some Bourbon.

There’s a lot of confusion surrounding the different types of whiskey and what makes which which. If you’re not a whiskey connoisseur, we’d like to help you out with that.

The first thing to keep in mind is that there are three ways whiskeys are categorized: where it’s made, the proportion of grains used in mash and how it’s aged.

Where it’s made. Every whiskey connoisseur knows that the difference between the whiskey and whisky isn’t just a typo. Most whiskey is made in the United States, but international brands can also be included in the “e” group. The exceptions to the spelling rule, as connoisseurs know, are those from Scotland, which are referred to as Scotch whiskies. Canadian whisky also falls under this rule for some reason.

The proportion of grains used in mash. You may not be a whiskey connoisseur yet but you’ve probably heard of Rye Whiskey, Scotch, Bourbon and blended whiskey. It can seem confusing to see so many different types of what appears to be the same thing.

When it comes down to the basics, whiskies/-eys are named according to the grain they’re distilled from. Whiskies/-eys can come from rye, corn or barley. The name they’re crowned with requires that the spirit is made of at least 51 percent of the chosen grain.

How it’s aged. There are a lot of legal requirements when it comes to making and branding whiskey. The casks chosen to age whiskey make them taste differently. This qualifies them under different naming standards.

Be sure to check back for more of the Non Connoisseur's Guide to Whiskey on our blog at https://www.originalbos.com/blogs/news!
